Thank you to my friends who have wished me a Happy Birthday this week. You, my friends, are a gift. People in our lives, whether or not they have been often mentioned before, are certainly not lauded enough. It is you our friends, you our families, who make our personal existences seem all too short and too precious to be anything but a celebration in your honor. With that intention I celebrated: making of the day itself no more but no less than another day in a continuous life of rowing, art, family, friendship and love. The self enters little into the celebration - it is an instrument for better things. Thank you Shane and Brandon for having breakfast with me. Good Times, Shane Times, Birthday Times, together. There could have been no better birthday gift, none I could have coveted more, than sharing savory morning fare amidst warmth between friends lounging in a breakfast turret room, cozy and safe from the midmorning Philadelphia frost. In our company of modest number we were surrounded by love, and could we have shared our table with many more still, could we have invited into that meal our precious friends and family not in attendance I have no doubt the intimacy and good spirit shared there would remain undivided but multiply, expand and flourish.
Still feeling pressure from the rituals of the day, meditating on what form some minor self-indulgence might take, days later I do not find the correct outlet. Perhaps there is none but what has already passed. The gift has been given; on with it. And so I feed the fires already burning, work the task started until done, and push aside small worries. In the completion of another year of life, looking forward to the first day of hopefully more to come, again the emotion overwhelming is thankfulness, to have come this far, to be allowed to continue on. Gifted, we are blessed to be able to move, able to use gifts given to us from without, and gifts given through blood and sweat unto us by the work of our own hand. Gifted, we gratefully roll on into the future with a keen eye to our purpose, and a sharpness for the hunt.
